PRESS RELEASE – 17th June 2008
“Australian Sauvignon Blanc Trophy” & “Western Australian Red Trophy” awarded to Western Australian winery, Clairault!
Clairault in Margaret River were already the most successful Western Australian wine brand at the show, winning a total of 10 awards when the initial results were announced in May. Now the only two gold medals awarded to Western Australian wines have turned into two trophies! Clairault now has two trophies, two gold, three silver, four bronze and one commended to bring home for the trophy cabinet!
Bill Martin, managing director had these comments, “It is a great honour and a phenomenal achievement to receive a trophy for the Best Western Australian Red Wine, let alone a trophy for the best Australian Sauvignon Blanc! It has left me, of Irish origin, almost speechless! I can tell you, it’s not come from the luck of the Irish, rather a lot of hard work, planning and persistence. This sort of recognition elevates Clairault’s well known reputation for super premium wine to another level and also takes the respected Margaret River wine region name along for the ride.”
About the 2008 International Wine Challenge
Last month 267 wines were awarded gold medals. Today, the pre-eminent arbiter of wine quality the International Wine Challenge announces the 90 wines which, after a further rigorous blind tasting, have been elevated from gold medal to trophy status. Following two weeks of blind tasting to establish the medal rankings, the IWC co-chairmen Tim Atkin MW, Sam Harrop MW, Charles Metcalfe and Derek Smedley MW hosted a separate trophy tasting for their newly appointed panel chairs as well as their senior judges. It was the balance, personality and finesse of these exemplary wines that distinguished them as deserving of an IWC trophy. A total of 114 trophies were awarded.
France regained the crown for most trophies which Australia had narrowly snatched from it last year whilst Portugal made it to the third place in the trophy stakes for a third year running. Argentina recorded its best record to date with six trophies, beating Chile’s very respectable five, amongst them the international trophies for Cabernet Franc and Tannat. Trophy winning wines hailed from 16 different countries. The top five were as follows: Trophies by country 2008: France (19), Australia (18), Portugal (12), Italy (10), Spain (8) & Japan (8 for Sake). “The judges responded to an even wider range of entries than ever before not only with 35 regional trophies, 26 national trophies, 18 international trophies but also by awarding trophies to all the grapes you can think of – and then some, examples being Aglianico, Fiano and Tannat,” explained IWC co-chairman Charles Metcalfe. About Clairault
Owned by the Martin family since 1999, there have been many improvements and upgrades over the last nine years. In the Vineyard, this has involved the introduction of biological farming, investment into mature vine management and an extension from 30 to 120 acres. The biological farming, sustainable and low intervention approach techniques were introduced into the Estate’s vineyards five years ago is unmistakably enhancing the quality of the fruit. This, along with the outstanding winemaking skills of Will Shields and his team, creates a wine that is truly unique and distinctive to Clairault’s vineyards. Biological farming is a mix of organic and conventional farming techniques which places a strong emphasis on soil biology. These techniques result in high quality crops, while using significantly less herbicide, no insecticides and no synthetic fertilisers.
In addition, the crushing capacity of the winery has tripled to accommodate the ever growing demand for Clairault’s wine domestically and overseas. The once small café serving light lunches has been transformed into one of the regions most popular Cellar Door restaurants offering an up-market, yet relaxed dining experience to accompany the internationally acclaimed wines. A natural extension to the existing wine tourism experience will be the future development of a European styled five star vineyard spa resort. This is expected to be developed over the next 2 years.

PRESS RELEASE – 4th June 2008
Clairault, the most successful Western Australian brand at the 2008 Decanter World Wine Awards!
Just a week after being named the most successful Western Australian brand at the 2008 International Wine Challenge in London!
“Clairault is still celebrating (and boasting) about the 10 awards received at the recent 2008 International Wine Challenge in London, so to receive another nine awards from Decanter within the same week is just remarkable! To be the most successful Western Australian wine brand at both of these highly notable and well respected wine shows is an absolute honour and pays tribute to the terroir of the Margaret River wine region.” Bill Martin, the Managing Director.
The Decanter World Wine Awards - the most influential wine competition in the world - attracted more entries this year than ever before. In total 9219 wines were entered, more than double the amount entered than when the competition launched just five years ago. Decanter's reputation for its unique judging process has often caused the competition to be called 'the ultimate terroir competition'.
On a similar scale to previous years only 64% of wines were awarded a medal, and of those just 2.84% won a gold medal or a trophy. 12.4% won a silver medal. Decanter World Wine Awards Chairman Steven Spurrier said 'winning a silver medal in the Decanter World Wine Awards is the equivalent of winning gold from other competitions. Our prestige goes before us.'
While terroir is celebrated, the consumer is paramount. As the world’s biggest and most respected wine media brand, Decanter manages to reach over 5 million consumers. 'Today's wine consumer has a genuine need for advice and guidance in choosing wine from the vast range on offer from all over the world,' said Michael Hill Smith MW, Regional Chair for Australia. 'Consumers trust Decanter, and it is this trust that underpins the continued success of the Decanter World Wine Awards'.
Many wine critics who have reviewed Clairault in the last 12 months, have mentioned the vast improvement in Clairault wines. This improvement is also evident through the accolades won in recent national and international wine shows.
